Hog Hunting – Dos Plumus Ranch, West Texas

Hog Hunting – Dos Plumus Ranch, West Texas

A few years back I set out to find a good hog hunting ranch in Texas for a group hunting trip. Although hogs are plentiful in Texas finding a quality hunting ranch took some work. After reviewing and speaking with a number of ranches I ended up scheduling our hunt with Allen and Bryce at Dos Plumas.

Since our first outing, I have been back to Dos Plumas numerous times over the last few years. Allen runs a no-nonsense safety first operation and if you can shoot you will come home with two hogs at an affordable price.

Dos Plumas is a working man’s ranch. No-frills but everything you need for a great hunt on a beautiful west Texas landscape.

December 2018 Hunting Trip

Settling into bunkhouse the night before the first hunt.

Each hunt at Dos Plumas includes two days of hunting. The package consists of two morning and two evening hunts with spot and stalk opportunities each day.

Sunrise from the blind on the first morning hunt.

Heard a few groups of hogs off in the distance during the morning but none made their way to my spot. Although I have had good luck in this area on past visits, we chalk one up for the hogs on this morning.

Getting settled in an excellent spot looking down a road for the evening hunt. This spot is well covered with lots of opportunities. It wasn’t long after getting set up that the first group of hogs came in view. With one good size male in the group, he dropped with a well-placed shot as the others scattered.

Shortly after the first group exited another large group came into view with another good size male in the mix. The big male was smart and stayed buried in the pack making it hard to get a shot. The big hog’s smarts were also his downfall as something spooked him, and he bolted into the brush. As he came back out in the clearing, he was separated from the group and allowed a clean shot.

With two good sized hogs down nothing left to do but sit back and enjoy the sunset.

It was a good evening for a number of hunters in our group.

Day two spot and stalk kill.

It was another great outing at Dos Pumas Ranch. Two in our party drove down from Canada on this hunt, and everyone had a great time. I am looking forward to going back soon.
