Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods

As with most of my projects, everything is behind schedule including my cabin in the woods. Just coming off the kitchen remodel and completing the first section of the road I have decided to hold off on the main cabin until sometime next year. In the time being, I’m going to convert the 6×10 tent platform into a small hunting cabin that can end up being a guest bunk in the future. Basically a glorified shed on steroids. The tent foundation is already solid, level and ready to be upgraded. The goal here is to remove the tarp posts and frame out a slant roof structure that’s 7 feet tall in the front and 6 feet in the back with a slant roof that overhangs on all sides. The overhang will be about a foot on the left, right, and rear and about 2 feet on the front. I had sketched up a basic design for the structure and will make modifications on the fly as needed. The first order of business is to frame out the main structure. I have decided to use 12in on center for both the frame and the roof for added strength as it doesn’t really add much cost with such a small structure.

With only the entrance section of the road complete, all materials have to be brought in on the smaller ATV trailer. This has made material delivery time consuming but it works as I’m able to secure three 4 x 8 sheets at a time and move them down the trail to the building site.

With the framing complete the next step is to add the outer sheathing and frame the roof. For the sheathing, I went with engineered OSB Smart Side that is sturdy and has a pre-primed wood panel texture on the front.
