Garden of the Gods Park Colorado

Garden of the Gods state park is located to the northwest of Colorado Springs and is a perfect place for a wide angle lens. The geologic features of the park are the ancient sedimentary beds of deep-red, pink and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestone that were deposited horizontally, but have now been tilted vertically and faulted into “fins” by the immense mountain building forces caused by the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and the Pikes Peak massif. If you happen to visit Garden of the Gods at a time of seasonal change you can experience amazing cloud formations that give way to exceptional photograph opportunities.

Most these photographs are shot on my D7000 with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens. Although I do own a full frame D800 I like the Tokina lens so much that I continue to shoot with it. The lens has excellent color reproduction and is exceptionally sharp. Sharpness can fade a little at the corners, but most of my images have some level of cropping in the final output whether I’m using a prime Nikon or one of my Sigma or Tokina lenses, so it’s never an issue or noticeable by most. The Tokina lens is also an exceptional value with the DX version costing less than $400.00. The only thing Nikon has that is comparable in the DX format is a 12 – 24 f/4 at $1000.00 for slower glass. The Tokina is a no-brainer for wide angle Colorado landscapes in my opinion.
